931 looks cooler than the 951

My friend’s 944 (not mine, his other one) is having issues so he visited Munk’s to inquire about what the cause might be, and how my car was coming along, and I’ve some decent news to share. :)

I might have a running and driving car sooner than I thought. There are fuel and wiring issues that need to be addressed, but they’ve gotten it running! Time to get started on restoring the interior and continuing to clear out the garage more before it comes back home. I’ll inquire about why it wouldn’t run in the past, but until then......

I FINALLY GET TO USE THIS GIF FOR THE FIRST TIME IN WHO KNOWS HOW LONG!!! :D

I uncovered a post I made a long time ago. It involved you. Remember when you were looking at getting a mustang? And I told you you bought the wrong front engined porsche?

I told you you should’ve gotten a 924 turbo. Admittedly it was a bit of a joke. But lo, the universe seems to decree that yes, K-roll does in fact, need a 924 turbo. The car so awesome, when it went racing, it had the word “Boss” written all over it. May your 924 turbo be forever as Boss as this one.

Awesome!!! I can’t wait to hear what was keeping it from running. (Hopefully not some weird K-Jetronic voodoo.)

Curiously enough, you have chosen a picture of the 1981 924 GTP Le Mans, the 924 that introduced the 944 engine (albeit still in prototype form, and with a twin-cam 16-valve head and turbo).

But yes, very much “the boss”.

I am well versed in the 924 GTP, and the 924 turbo Carerra GT/GTS versions they made for the road. Interestingly, Porsche used this to advertise both the 924, and the 944 when it came out. ANd in one 944 advertisement, did refer to it as the 944 GTP, but since it was branded as a 924 first, I think it should remain that way.

Never stated the contrary. I agree; indeed it should be called “924" because the 944 did not exist yet at the time. Of course it is only logical that Porsche later used the “944" angle in their ads: it very much straddles both models.

I always had a soft spot for the 924 GT/GTS cars; not so much the GTR, it looked way too brutish.

I was trying to point out – rather mischievously, I have to admit – that you still were, in a way, bringing the 944 back into your conversation with K-Roll.

Did they really ever make a 944 GTP? The only one I ever saw details on (from a Gooding auction) had a chassis # of 924-xxx. But it’s still one of my favorite Porsche print ads ever.

The 924 GTP that appears in the ad (1981) is the same car pictured in Mr Themanwithsauce previous posting. It is a 924 but this time with a prototype 944 engine. Of course the marketing department later decided to “rechristen” it as a 944, but as you say, the chassis number is 924, the car started life as a 924 body (in fact, it was based on the body of one of the 1980 924 GTP cars, which still ran the Audi engine) and, more importantly, there simply was no 944 yet on sale.

So if you want the 1981 924 GTP Le Mans (the one in the ad, with “Boss” livery) is a sort of missing link between the 924 and the 944. Sometimes it is called 944 LM or even 944 GTR, but I’d like to find the original official entry list for Le Mans ‘81 before saying something which could be wrong. Still, the chassis had started life as a 924, no doubt. Even if it was a much-evolved 924 Carrera GT version.

I bought a 924 in high school for $200 from my manager at Pizza Hut. It had been sitting with its roof open for months (years?) and had a solid 3 inches of pine needles, pine cones, and other debris on the floor and seats. After I drove it home, I had a big fat stripe of mold across my shirt from the seatbelt lol. The exhaust had been cut off below the shift lever, and it made it steam up on my drive home lol. It ended up getting towed by my parents’ home owners association, and I gifted it to them as an F-you. Part of me wishes I kept it, but there are definitely way better 924s on the road than that one
